The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, commonly referred to as IIT Roorkee, is one of the premier institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. The institute was initially established as the Roorkee College in 1847, making it one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia. It was rechristened as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 after its founder, Sir James Thomason, and later elevated to the status of a University in 1949 as the University of Roorkee. It was declared an institute of national importance and renamed the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2001.
